Innovation and sustainability have always been fundamental characteristics of FPT Industrial. In order to remain at the forefront of technological advancements and effectively respond to market needs, the Brand created ePowertrain department in 2018. Based in the R&D centers in Arbon, Switzerland and Turin, Italy, the ePowertrain department is focused on developing the powertrains of tomorrow, today.
Being a global leader means setting new targets that grow more challenging every day. To reach them, we have drawn on our expertise along with the best innovative start-ups worldwide, through partnerships, acquisitions and joint ventures.

eAxle LCV
For the first time, FPT Industrial is presenting a new prototype of an electric axle engineered for commercial vehicle applications. Demonstrating its commitment to R&D solutions, the prototype was designed to integrate each component of the electric driveline with an extremely compact design, ensuring maximum performance and efficiency (>92%) without compromising on reliability. All distinctive features of FPT Industrial. The product was designed to replace traditional powertrain solutions on existing standard platforms with a minor impact and low adaptations. Thanks to FPT’s engineering know-how, the project can be declined in multiple configurations. The design presented at CES2022 has a dual-central motor layout, with maximum power of 72.5 kWh and maximum torque of 290 Nm per single engine, designed for GVW up to 10 tons. The first version of this proto has been developed within SYS2WHEEL project, supported by the European Commission in the H2020 program.

eAxle HCV
The clearest example of the concrete approach of FPT Industrial’s zero-emission innovative strategy is the joint venture between IVECO, NIKOLA and FPT Industrial: just 2 years after the announcement, at CES2022 we are presenting for the first time the HCV (Heavy Commercial Vehicles – Class 8 trucks) e-axle designed for the Nikola Tre. A dual-electric motor axle for GVW vehicles up to 44 tons that guarantees high performance and efficiency with a maximum power of 420 kW and a maximum torque of 900 Nm for each motor. Reliability, performance, outstanding efficiency (>92%) and low TCO, with long oil change intervals and a stated durability of up to 1,200k km are all in line with FPT Industrial’s DNA.
The joint venture with Nikola motors has combined the advanced technologies and revolutionary business formulas of the American startup with FPT’s proven engineering and production experience in industrialization. As a result, we have rapidly designed, engineered and launched a product that is destined to dominate the world market of electric heavy vehicles for the next few years. The Nikola Tre project is completed by the new IVECO S-WAY vehicle platform, which integrates Iveco’s proven vehicle technology (with an advanced cab-over structure) with NIKOLA’s innovative driver experience technology for controls and infotainment. Designed for the new Nikola TRE, the new electric axle can be scaled and adapted to the increased demands of electric mobility – battery or fuel cell propulsion – for long-distance trade.

Energy storage solutions & management
FPT Industrial’s high-performance, reliable and top-quality ePowertrain range is completed by state-of-art energy storage and management solutions. In collaboration with Microvast, based in Texas, U.S.A., a market leader in ultra-fast charging, long-life battery power systems, FPT Industrial has started to develop and produce internal battery packs for all application needs. At CES2022 we are showcasing a 37 kWh version, the compact design version for light commercial vehicle and minibus application thanks to its multipack option and compact design. Furthermore, thanks to a cross-section of a cell module, you can see the efficient structure of the high-capacity Microvast cell pouch modules.
BMS – Battery Management System
FPT Industrial’s commitment to high-performance and reliable electrification solutions for transport is completed by a range of state-of-the-art Battery Management Systems, customized to get the longest battery life based on mission requirements, thanks to the acquisition of Potenza Technology, an outstanding British company at the forefront of electric powertrain technologies, with a consolidated and diverse set of skills in functional safety engineering, battery management systems for traction accumulators and the design and development of electrical and electronic systems. The BMS solution resulting from the partnership between FPT Industrial and Potenza Technology is highly flexible for different energy storage solutions, permitting a considerable reduction in development times, while guaranteeing customized software solutions without compromising ASIL integrity levels.
